Oleg Cassini

Oleg Cassini

There was only one official designer for first lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Oleg Cassini was up for the challenge. Born in Paris in 1913, Cassini’s mother was a dressmaker and his career started by creating one of a kind pieces to sell at her shop. He ventured to New York and worked at several different clothing manufacturers before landing a costume design position at Twentieth-Century Fox in Hollywood. He designed costumes for numerous films from the early 1940’s and into the 1960’s including, Tales of Manhattan, The Razor’s Edge, Born to Speed,Rampage, and The Ambushers and many others. He created custom gowns for the likes of Betty Grable, Joan Crawford, Rita Hayworth, Natalie Wood, and Marilyn Monroe to name a few. Femininity was a key component in his designs, many including soft, romantic fabrics like lace, taffeta, and chiffon. In the 1960’s Cassini moved away from couture and started a ready to wear business with his brother. Instead of lavish gowns he created tailored suits and introduced color into a normally somber world of menswear.
