Patrick Kelly

Patrick KellyPatrick Kelly (1954 – 1990) was a fashion designer from Vicksburg, Mississippi. In his late 20's Kelly moved to Paris, where he became both the first American and the first black person to work with Chambre syndicale du prêt-à-porter des couturiers et des créateurs de mode. For 5 years he was producing successful collections from Paris, achieving a wholesale of over 7 million USD per year. Kelly's work was sold in top retail locations, including Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdale's. His designs were worn by celebrities including Isabella Rossellini, Bette Davis, Cicely Tyson and Grace Jones. Kelly was known for emphasizing issues of race, often including models of color in his shows. His work was notorious for its bright colors, ribbons and buttons that carried a sense of whimsy and joy.
